Volunteer Tanzania
Tanzania offers international volunteers a variety of ways to contribute as well as the chance to explore some of the most amazing destinations in the world.
The Serengeti, Ngorongoro crater, Zanzibar, Kilimanjaro - Africa's highest point, at 5,895 meters (19,340 feet) are just a few of the alluring destinations in Tanzania.
Despite tourism playing an important part of the economy, Tanzania struggles on multiple levels. While Tanzania is one of Africa's most politically stable countries, it is also one of the least developed.
The country faces extreme poverty, an increase in HIV/AIDS infections and a staggering lack of educational resources. Tanzania currently has one of the lowest secondary school enrollment rates in the world.
The economy suffers due to the fact that 80% of Tanzanians farms and fishing industries are at subsistence levels and in many areas tse-tse fly infestation hampers successful animal husbandry. Other major problems include deteriorating roads, railways and high energy costs.
The current population is estimated to be at 46 million people and consists of more than 120 ethnic groups. A multiparty system was established in 1992 after a constitutional amendment. Kiswahili is the official language, however, English is very prevalent. Religious beliefs are primarily Christian and Muslim, as well as indigenous religions.
IMPORTANT NOTE:
The Tanzanian government has raised the cost of their Class C Tourist Permit (which is the visa required for volunteers in Tanzania) to 550 USD. This fee does not include the tourist permit issued at the airport on arrival which costs 50 USD for most nationalities. (Please check with the consulate to ensure that you are aware of the costs and restrictions for citizens of your country).
This expense is not included in the cost of the program so volunteers going to Tanzania will need to prepare for this significant additional expense.
